Who is Anthony Newley?
Anthony Newley is an English songwriter, who would probably best be remembered for the songs from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (Candy Man, Pure Imagination, etc), but that’s just the stuff we know. You won’t find any other spoilers here though.
If you want to know more, I suggest you check out Eddie Bruce’s Cabaret, “Once In A Lifetime… The Anthony Newley Songbook”. Monday night I had the opportunity to see the show for the second time (the first being back in like 1999), and I loved it even more than the first time. As always, Eddie Bruce is a great performer, and although he is best known in Philadelphia for having what could be the most successful society band in the city, he also happens to be a world class performer, and seeing him in an intimate dinner theater style setting only allows him to shine that much brighter.
In his typical charming and charismatic way, Bruce speaks to his audience, not ‘at’ them, while casually introducing us to Anthony Newley – performing songs we know, and some we don’t – treating us to tidbits and factoids all about Tony Newley, making the show not just entertaining, but interesting and captivating.
Dare I say it was educational?
Now you know the cat is hip when he can entertain while teaching the audience something at the same time.
Eddie will be debuting the show at Feinstein’s in New York City on Sunday, September 26.
